Trabant 601 Universal

This Trabant 601 Universal has been parked behind an abandoned discotheque in Germany for the last few years, maybe even decades. It's still wearing its original numberplates from the German Democratic Republic.
Before Germany was reunited in 1990, the Trabant was the most popular car in East Germany with more than three million cars having been built from 1957 on. The 'wagon' version of the Trabant only had three doors, none of which are left on the car pictured above.
There still are lots of examples in better condition, though, as you can see below.

Mercedes-Benz /8

Somewhere in Greece, this nice Mercedes-Benz W114/W115 (usually referred to as "/8") is standing unused at a roadside. Apart from some missing chrome and the too new W123-rims, this example looks almost collectible-like. Like many Mercedes of this size, it probably had a long and useful life since it left the factory between 1973 and 1976. As the /8 was very successful, there are still plenty of it left, making it a quite affordable classic today. So maybe someone decided this Mercedes was cheap enough to not drive it, but place it on the roadside as decoration.

Ford Thunderbird

This 1967 Ford Thunderbird is standing on a scrapyard in the United States. Not a project for a weekend, but with a proper restoration, this example is probably still saveable.
The fifth generation of the Thunderbird was even bigger and more luxurious than the previous ones. With its big 8-cylinder-engine, it was not a slow car, though. Between 1967 and 1971, Ford sold more than 270.000 Thunderbirds. With six more generations to come, the Thunderbird was produced until 2005. At least the first six or seven generations are popular classics nowadays.
Therefore, more T-Birds look like the one below than like the one above today.

[Multi] Opel GT

The Opel GT, of which 103.463 examples left the factory between 1968 and 1973, always was a doubtlessly desirable car. In its homecountry, Germany, it still is well known for the slogan "Nur Fliegen ist schöner" - "Only flying is better.". More than 50.000 cars were exported to the USA, though, where it was known as the "Baby-Corvette". As you can see in these pictures here, not all of them survived. Nevertheless, the Opel GT is a popular classic today, with good examples reaching prices of 25.000€/30.000$. So, even the examples above and below probably are still worth some money. Most of them would require much more money to restore them, though.

[Multi] Citroën DS

This Citroën DS has been abandoned in a barn of a farm in Great Britain, along with many other classic cars. The Citroën DS, famous for its elegant design and the innovative hydropneumatic suspension, is a popular classic nowadays. It has many fans around the world willing to pay high prices for a good example of the "goddess" (from the French pronounciation of the name: "Déesse"). These fans have to be strong now, as not all 1,5 million examples built by Citroën have always been loved by their owners and I have collected some of those that weren't.

Skoda 1000MB

Although more than 400000 Skoda 1000MBs were built in the Eastern Bloc between 1964 and 1969, it is a very rare car now, partly because these cars already left the factory heavily rusting (for having that bad reputation, the abandoned car above looks remarkably good, though).
The rear engine concept also lead to massive cooling problems. The 1000MB even had an extra cooling water reservoir because blown head gaskets made many of them lose this fluid.
Due to the lack of better alternatives east of the Berlin Wall and because of it being considered exceptionally elegant, the 1000MB sold quite well nevertheless.
The car pictured above (which has been found in Berlin, Germany) is an example of the first series, which was produced till 1966 and is, in my opinion, a much more beautiful car than the later models, which got a rectangular grille and lost the lights on the C-pillars.
One of the rare, but still not expensive 1000MBs looking like new is shown below.

Jeep Wagoneer

Being "Styled for beauty, built for duty", the Jeep Wagoneer was the first luxury SUV ever built. Without major technical changes, the Wagoneer was produced from 1963 to 1991.
The body of the example above belongs to the second generation, which was built from 1967 to 1971.
Below is how it looked like when new.

Chrysler New Yorker

This abandoned 1966 Chrysler New Yorker has been found in Canada.
Although it seems this big car (5,54 metres long) has been standing there for quite a while, it still looks saveable.
Providing the 7,2l-V8-engine with its 350bhp is still in it, this could be well worth a restoration.

Volkswagen T2

Within 12 years, 2,5 million transporters just of this generation were produced from 1967 on.
Many examples of this kind of iconic car are now rotting on scrapyards, while the same model is still built with only minor changes in Brasil.
However, the fate of the car in the picture is rather special, as it has been abandoned on a city street in Scotland.
As everyone knows how a VW Transporter looks, here is another abandoned example instead of a comparison picture.

Toyota Celica

This Toyota Celica has a very special story to tell.
It is standing in a Toyota dealership in a military buffer zone on Cyprus that had to be abandoned in 1974.
Since then, this and some other cars with as little as 37 miles driven in their whole lives are standing there collecting dust.
A comparison picture is not necessary this time, I think, as the car is "new". Only the motorhood looks damaged and the mirrors have probably been stolen, as you can see from the holes in the fenders.
Here you can find more photos this photographer took when he had the opportunity to visit that great place. The town is still not accessible and guarded by soldiers.

MGB

The sight of an abandoned MGB is quite unusual, as this car definitely is a classic.
In its era, there was no better selling sports car in the world. Between 1962 and 1980, almost 400000 examples were sold.
There are still thousands of fans of this car, which also leads to spare parts still being produced for the MGB.
But instead of caring for his car like many other MG-owners do, the owner of this one used it as a litter bin.
The three wipers and bumpers with rubber indicate that this car was sold in the US between 1970 and 1973.

Simca 1100

Won't write too much this time, the pictures speak for themselves.
The Simca was produced more than 2 million times between 1968 and 1981.
Later, the make was converted to Talbot by the owner, Peugeot.

Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and Porsche 911

Here we have a nice combo on a farm in Australia.

Both cars were expensive when they were built. Nowadays, they are not extremely expensive anymore, because they are not that rare.
The Silver Shadow I, also known as Silver Wraith, has been built about 17000 times and is nowadays available for around 10000€ in good condition.
The Porsche, which has been produced in much larger numbers, nevertheless costs at least 15000€ for a good example.
Both cars were built in the second half of the 1960's.
I can't imagine a reason why the owner of the farm lets them and many other cars rot there, but he won't sell them and their condition does not really look excellent.

Saab 96

The Saab 96 was first introduced to the market in 1960. After five years, it got a big facelift that made it look like the example in the picture, which is rusting away somewhere in Colorado, USA. That also means it has a four stroke cycle engine, which was a big innovation for Saab.
The next facelift in 1969 changed the headlights to a form that was kept nearly untouched until the end of the production in 1980.
Pay attention to the wooden bumper of the abandoned Saab.
As usual in the 1960s, the bumper originally was chrome, as you can see here:

Datsun 411 Bluebird SS

This Datsun was found in the yard of a Canadian Nissan dealership.
The model has been built from 1964 to 1967, changing its name from 410 with a minor facelift in 1965. As the difference between the 1964 and 1965 model is only recongizable by changed letters on the fender, which are missing on this car here, I can't tell whether this is a 410 or a 411. However, it was definitely built before 1966, as the grille changed in this year.
The SS-version was Datsun's "performance-saloon" with 65 hp compared to 45 to 60 hp in the normal models.

Jaguar XJ Series II

This is a Jaguar XJ6 Series II, which has been built from 1973 to 1979. The car in this picture does not look to rusty, just the dirt coming with time has covered the paint. It has been abandoned in the garden of a house nobody lives in anymore. The car seems to be a bit customized with tinted windows, extra chrome around the wheels and white sidewall tires. So somebody seemed to have liked it before it was left to rot.
It once was a large luxurious limousine with 3.4 or 4.2 litre engines. Nearly 130000 Jaguar XJ Series II were sold, including the coupe-version. The XJ6 cost around 65000$ at that time.
Nowadays, it is not especially rare or expensive, although very good examples can cost more than 25000$.
